Not sure where to post this
« on: September 26, 2010, 09:18:26 PM »
Hey guys I recently acquired a 03 Quattro 1.8t for free.  It drove perfect for about 4 months then the clutch went, no worries I'm getting a new clutch for free as well.  And thats where this site came in, I was looking to see if I could do it myself for less then the $3000 the dealer quoted me.  I have done pretty much everything to a V8 rear-wheel drive American vehicle but this is gonna be my first try with a 4 banger all-wheel drive car.

Dam 3g's! I would say find another place. Usually about 1k - 1200 for a clutch job. If you read Martini's write up on clutch install and understand everything you prolly could do it. But if not then i would have a shop do the work. But free 1.8t man must be nice!

Not sure, it is my wifes daily driver.  It's a brute power/perfection from rockauto.com.  We dont race or drive hard so hopefully it will be good enough for us.  I do however plan to buy the wife a newer car and drive this one myself.  I started the teardown for the clutch replacement tonite.  Took a couple of hours with hand tools to remove the axle heat sheild and exhaust downpipe.  Not to bad I don't think, this thing is a whole different beast of an animal compared to what I have worked on before.  But I did replace the slave cylinder last week hoping it was the problem.  I made my own pressure bleeder for less then $20 though.

hopefully you have lots of odd torx bit/triple squares, etc!  I'm assuming you read the clutch removal writeup right?

Yes I have alot of the triple square bits as well as torques bits.  I have read the write up about 25 times front to back.  I will post questions here in a little while about some differences between my trans and the one pictured in the write up.

I did mine on jack stands and it was surprisingly easy.  It only took 4 1/2 hours to reinstall everything but about 10 1/2 to remove it.  I have driven it about 100 miles so far with no issues.  I want to thank this site for all the info it has given me on my clutch replacement.
